Topics:Renewable Energy Resource Mapping of Korea Using Earth Observation Data
Brief Introduction of the SpeakerSouth Korea heavily depends on foreign energy resources by importing most of its primary energy consumption, so that the importance of renewable energy as a clean and safe energy source is growing to replace fossil fuel and establish sustainable energy supply system. Over the last 15 years, the Korean government has established its second, third, and fourth basic plans for renewable energy use and suggested national supply targets. However, the distribution rate of renewable energy in Korea is quite low. In the end of 2016, only 2.7% of the entire electricity supply is generated by renewable energy sources, which is only 1.4%p higher than 10 years ago. The newly-elected president of Korea has proclaimed a “safe and clean energy policy,” advancing Korea into a new phase of its energy transition effort. Accordingly, the new administration announced its goal of satisfying 20% of the country’s total electricity consumption with renewable energy by 2030. As it shows the government’s strong commitment, this goal has heightened expectations among the public.
